An article in the current Yoga Journal (not yet online) discusses how to properly round the spine in seated forward bends such as upavista konasana. We are often told not to round the spine in these poses, but Iyengar instructor Roger Cole explains, vertebra by vertebra, how to strike a balance between keeping the integrity of the spine and allowing for a natural rounding. I like this idea of looking for a degree of rounding that is not a collapse. Check it out.
